PLACES, IN THEIR OWN HANDWRITING

The shape of connections.

A SMALL FIELD GUIDE

Follow the connections.

I / WATERWAYS

The network is the drawing.

Prepared river studies follow real upstream connections. Fine tributaries build the shape; higher stream orders carry more ink. Search a location for a local view of mapped rivers, streams and canals.

II / FORESTS

A finder, and a collection.

Any location can reveal beautiful woodland shapes. The prepared collection goes further: measured tree-cover cells, carefully chosen extents and consistent detail. Country browsing helps you discover those places.

III / ROADS

A place to converge.

Choose a city or your own destination. Roads shared by more sampled routes grow darker and thicker. Explore colours by incoming direction, branch, or travel time; rainbow hierarchy separates local streets from highways with gradual blends.

Sources, detail & what the maps mean

Prepared forest dots encode classified tree cover, not individual trees. Forest outlines come from simplified display patches. Live maps use available OpenStreetMap vector geometry, whose detail and completeness vary by place and scale. Live stipple is a drawing texture; it does not measure canopy density. All maps preserve geographic proportions within their source projection. A country filter is a discovery aid; cross-border geography is kept intact.

Road routes follow the loaded road network toward one destination. Starting points are sampled within the source area; disconnected starts cannot produce a route. Road weights measure shared routes, not vehicle counts or measured traffic. Continental routes reuse one prepared source graph with routes from its mapped junctions; the overview reveals finer branches as you zoom, while exports retain loaded source detail. Regional and continental studies use documented source road classes. Road structure shows the loaded network; rainbow colour describes mapped road class.

Prepared river networks are historical mapped upstream selections, not exhaustive catchment boundaries or current river conditions. Full source and processing information accompanies exports. Print / PDF places the artwork on the first page and credits on the second.
